Choosing a Mail Forwarding Service That Works for You

by Siri Shadduck on January 30, 2009

Although email is extremely useful, paper mail continues to play a significant role in our lives. One of the problems expatriates face when moving abroad is figuring out how to continue to receive their postal mail. In these situations, mail-forwarding services are very practical. A typical mail forwarding service will simply redirect your mail to your new address at the frequency you desire. However, many companies also provide online access, content scanning, package forwarding, and repacking services, among other things. There are many contenders in this market and the choices can be confusing, which is why we’ve made a list of the major players so that you can easily compare and decide which is the best choice for you.

From there calculate your costs for each provider. Keep in mind that not all services offer the same features, and the pricing can vary substantially. Take consolidation for instance; while some companies simply don’t offer it, others charge a flat fee per item, while others will give you a discounted percentage on shipping. Concentrate on what suits you best. Mail services allow you to easily live outside of the United States without having to depend on friends on family to handle your mail

There’s another new paperless mail service that I signed up for a few weeks ago offering very reasonable fees – Mailbox Forwarding (http://www.mailboxforwarding.com). They only charge $9.95/mo and include 10 scans with their basic plan, and I’ve been pleased with the online interface.

I’ve signed up with Lil’Shoppa (http://www.lilshoppa.com). They are small and personal and only charge a flat 15% handling fee per order. No minimums, memberships or ongoing fees. And they ship FAST! I highly recommend them. They also shop for you and bill through PayPal and Google Checkout. Very easy and reliable.

I used Viaddress.com at http://www.viaddress.com/ . They offer the lowest shipping rates to forward packages from the US to other countries.
The fact that they don’t have a Setup fee or a monthly membership fee, had convinced me to use them for my last purchase from the states, and I’m quite satisfied with the speed of the processing of my packages.
I decided to follow them on twitter at http://twitter.com/viaddress/ and I got hold of some pretty generous coupons that I used to get some pretty darn good discounts.

Viaddress.com is definitely the best at forwarding packages from the United States. They’re the only ones that offer a free personal shopper service. All others take a commission fee of 5% to 15%.
I’ve been using them for almost a year now and I’m quite satisfied.
